What does the Clarilux label say it is for?

The pack promises visual clarity & sharp focus, comfort for tired eyes and protection from daily screen stress, under the slogan See Life Brighter. These are the maker’s words on the box — we do not confirm them. No study of Clarilux has been published, and in India supplements may not be advertised as a remedy for poor eyesight, cataract or glaucoma.

Plainly: Clarilux is a nutrient supplement with lutein and zeaxanthin, the yellow pigments found in the retina and in green leafy vegetables.

Clarilux capsule ingredients

Amounts as printed on the label, per daily dose of 2 capsules. The capsules are vegetarian.

  • 6 mgLutein

A yellow carotenoid pigment; spinach, methi leaves and egg yolk are food sources.

  • 2 mgZeaxanthin

A carotenoid closely related to lutein, found in the centre of the retina.

  • 100 mgBilberry extractVaccinium myrtillus

A small European berry related to blueberry.

  • 100 mgRosemary extractRosmarinus officinalis

The kitchen herb, here as an extract.

Amounts as printed on the label, per 2 capsules.

For comparison: the AREDS2 eye-vitamin formula used in a large US trial contains 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin together with vitamins C and E, zinc and copper. Clarilux has less lutein and none of the vitamins or minerals — so it is not an AREDS2 formula.

How to take Clarilux capsule

  1. Take 1 capsule after breakfast and 1 after dinner.
  2. Lutein dissolves in fat, so taking it after a meal is sensible.
  3. Do not take more than 2 capsules a day.
  4. Keep using your glasses and eye drops as prescribed.

20 capsules at 2 a day last 10 days.

Clarilux capsule side effects and who should not take it

The label says: Not for pregnant women and children.

Who should not take it

  • Pregnant women and children — this is printed on the pack.
  • Breastfeeding women — not enough is known; ask your doctor.
  • Anyone allergic to bilberry, blueberry, cranberry or rosemary.

Medicines to watch

  • Blood thinners and anti-platelet medicines (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel): bilberry extract may add to their effect. Ask your doctor first.
  • Eye drops or tablets for glaucoma and other eye treatment must be continued as prescribed. A supplement is not a replacement.

Go to an eye doctor straight away if you notice

Sudden loss or blurring of vision, eye pain, flashes of light, a shower of new floaters or a “curtain” over part of your view. These can be signs of retinal detachment, an acute glaucoma attack or another emergency — do not wait to see if capsules help. Regular eye check-ups, correct glasses and screen breaks matter more than any supplement.

What the research says about these ingredients

The best evidence on eye supplements comes from the US National Eye Institute’s AREDS and AREDS2 trials. Their formula helped slow vision loss only in people who already had intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It did not prevent AMD, did not help people with early or no AMD, and had no effect on cataract.

On bilberry, the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says it has not been clearly shown to help any health condition; well-designed studies found no improvement in night vision in healthy people. Research on rosemary for eyes is minimal.

For tired eyes from screens, the proven steps are free: regular breaks, blinking, the right glasses and a check-up.
